Women fight climate change in Africa
Among experts there is no doubt, that in the future there will be a lack of water in Africa due to the climate change. Women play a big role in the farming world of Africa. And they are the ones who can save Africa from the worst effects of climate change.
The climate change has already influenced Africa, and in the future the effects will only grow. One of the greatest challenges will be insufficient amounts of fresh water. In many parts of the continent irrigation is a big part of the agriculture. This means Africa must make the most of the limited supplies of water to supply food for the growing population And this is where the women come in.
Women and farming are not usually a match in the Western world. But in Africa almost 80 percent of the food is produced by women. To help them be as efficient as possible, they will have to get more responsibility and access to agricultural supplies. It is believed that by giving more opportunities to women farmers, the production could rise with up to 20 percent.
More responsibility to women
“They (the women) should be economic self determent and have ownership over the land they cultivate. It is bad economy, when their huge resources are limited,” the Danish Minister of Development, Ulla Tørnæs, wrote in a commentary in a news paper last year.
